|Hometown Lift for a Hometown Makeover|
When Extreme Makeover: Home Edition featured a makeover for the family of Patrick Henry Hughes in Aquatic Access's hometown, we were pleased and gratified to pitch in and provide a pool lift for Patrick Henry. This young man is a local superstar in Louisville, Kentucky, and is an inspiration to everyone who hears his story. Born without eyes and with unusually short limbs, Patrick Henry learned to play the piano as a child. Extremely gifted, Patrick Henry also mastered the trumpet, and became particularly well-known for his participation in the University of Louisville Marching Band. Playing his trumpet from his wheelchair, Patrick Henry is maneuvered around the field by his father as the band performs. As a part of the Makeover, the band's practice field was renovated and a complete new home for the family built. Patrick Henry's talents extend to languages. At the university, he is a Spanish major and plans to pursue a career in the diplomatic service after graduation.
The renovation of the Hughes home was a mammoth community project spearheaded by Elite Homes, Inc. It drew volunteers from all over the community, and the new home for the family became a reality late in 2007. The finished home was a closely held community secret until the show aired in February, 2008. In early May, Aquatic Access visited the Hughes home to put the lift into operation for the summer swimming season. The lift will enable Patrick Henry to access the pool and enjoy the water independently.
This most recent makeover is the third such endeavor for Aquatic Access. The first two were in 2004 in California. The third was in Enders, Tennessee in 2006. Each of these lifts was custom-designed by Aquatic Access engineers and built to meet an exact schedule by the manufacturing team.
